Where is the best place to learn to ski in the US?

These are the four mountains we recommend most, depending on what you want:

  • Calm and great serviceDeer Valley, Utah.
  • A lively townPark City, Utah.
  • Aspen without the fearButtermilk, Aspen's beginner mountain.
  • A guarantee you'll learnBeaver Creek, Colorado.

Where you learn matters more than you'd think. At the right mountain, within days you're cruising down a long run with a smile. At the wrong one, you spend the week scared, or bored on a tiny slope. Counting green runs isn't enough. These are the best ski resorts for beginners, in our view, and why.

What makes a ski resort good for beginners?

  • A learning area separated from faster skiers, with conveyor lifts.
  • Long green runs, so you aren't stuck at the base once you're ready.
  • A strong ski school, with instructors who teach beginners every day.
  • Lodging close to the snow and a short airport transfer.

A low percentage isn't always bad: only 8% of Park City is beginner terrain, but out of 7,300 acres, that's a lot.

The 4 best mountains for beginners

Deer Valley, Utah

The most comfortable place to start

Best for

Learning in peace: it's skiers-only, caps daily tickets and keeps its runs immaculate. It has long green runs from high on the mountain.

Not for

Learning to snowboard: it isn't allowed.

Park City, Utah

Best when not everyone skis

Best for

Mixed-ability groups and anyone who wants a lively town. It has learning areas at both bases and sits about 40 minutes from Salt Lake City's airport.

Not for

Anyone seeking quiet: the main base gets busy on peak dates.

More in skiing Park City.

Buttermilk, Aspen, Colorado

The gateway to Aspen

Best for

Anyone who dreams of Aspen but has never skied. 35% of Buttermilk is beginner terrain, on the same ticket as Aspen's other three mountains.

Not for

Anyone expecting to ski out of a downtown hotel: Aspen Mountain, right above town, has no beginner runs.

Beaver Creek, Colorado

With a green-run guarantee

Best for

People who like a clear goal. Its ski school offers the Green Run Guarantee: if you aren't ready for a green run after three two-hour lessons, your fourth is free.

Not for

Short trips: the transfer from Denver is long. Eagle airport is closer but has fewer flights.

Which mountains should beginners avoid?

Jackson Hole: only 10% of its terrain is for beginners, and its fame comes from expert steeps. Aspen Mountain: it has no beginner runs. Both are incredible, but save them for your second or third trip. We compare them all in where to ski in the US.
