How long does it take to learn to ski?

With lessons, most people can get down a green run in about three days.

Beaver Creek, for example, recommends at least three two-hour lessons to get there. In group lessons, plan on about a week; with private lessons, three straight days is often enough.

Ski lessons for beginners are the best investment of a first trip, and the first thing to sell out on peak dates. A good instructor saves you days of falling and teaches what a friend can't explain: how to stop, and how to lose your fear of the slope. Here's what to know before you book.

An approach we like: private lessons for the first two days, to start with confidence, then a group or practice on your own.

What is your first ski lesson like?

  1. Early · GearPick up your boots, skis and helmet, unless they've been delivered. Ski boots feel strange: that's normal.
  2. First hour · On the flatYou learn to walk on skis, click in and get back up.
  3. Next · The wedgeWith tips together and tails apart, you learn to slow down and control your speed. Everything builds on this.
  4. Later · Conveyor liftYou ride the magic carpet up and glide down a gentle slope, first straight, then turning.
  5. At the end · Your first chairIf it's going well, your instructor shows you how to ride a chairlift. Many people get there on day two.

Ski lessons for kids

Each ski school sets its own minimum age, so check before you book. Some instructors say kids under 7 find it easier to learn with other children than in a private lesson, though opinions vary. Many schools offer full-day programs with lunch, which also gives you a few hours to ski on your own.

How to get the most out of your lessons

  • Book early. On peak dates, private instructors sell out before hotels.
  • Ask for mornings. Fewer people, and your legs are fresh.
  • Say what scares you. A good instructor adapts if you tell them.
  • Take consecutive lessons. Three days in a row do far more than three separate lessons.
  • Get your boots right. If they hurt, ask for help: it's almost always fixable.

Frequently asked questions

How many ski lessons does a beginner need?

At least three two-hour lessons to reach a green run, as Beaver Creek recommends. In group lessons, plan on more days.

Are private or group ski lessons better?

For adults with few days, private: you progress faster. For kids, and anyone with a whole week, group lessons work very well.

Is skiing hard to learn?

The first days are the most tiring, but with an instructor most people get down a gentle run within a few days.

How far in advance should you book ski lessons?

On peak dates, at the same time as your lodging. Otherwise, one to three months ahead is usually enough.
